The Story of Xtract
Transforming job into a purpose
Xtract is a transformative Environmental Protection Project that started back in 2023. Growing in a society where the citizens want change but lack awareness and vital information on how change can be implemented, our purpose is to bring change little by little. We embrace a strategy of empowering the community from the ground up, spread awareness by facilitating leadership opportunities and advocating for changes with a real impact.
Romania lacks education on what is today one of the most important global issues – climate change. Although the EU implemented decisions to impose certain ecological standards, Romania is far from the target at the moment.
BY 2035, EU Target was 65% for Municipal waste recycling while Romania only recycling rate was only 13% in 2016. Furthermore,
for Municipal waste landfilling, EU Target by 2035 is 10%, while Romania 69% is floating on ladfilling waste, not having the capacity to recycle. Romanian producers are importing 50% of the waste for production, as Romania does not recycle enough for producers to have the necessary amount of material.
Therefore, the idea behind Xtract is to implement a local service that focuses on plastic ONLY. Citizen well be rewarded monetarily for the refund of bottles and bottles will be separated through an automatized process by PET and non-PET, washed, purified, and cut. Furthermore, it will be given for refabrication and reproduction.
Our Process
How is the plastic recycled?
✓Collection - plastic is collected through special recycling stations. There will be 10 stations across Cluj-Napoca and each of them will have a SMART recycling bin for collecting PET and a normal bin for HDPE and LDPE
✓Segregation - PET plastic can be automatically segregated by colour and size through a sensor machine. Therefore, the PET will be separated based on colour into different groups.HPDE will have to be sorted in the deposit after the collection, by a specialized machine and will require human capital who will check the quality level of separation
✓Washing and cutting through both mechanical recycling and chemical recycling
The plastic is recycled based on the substances with which it was in contact. In the case of detergents and chemical substances is broken down into monomers - sugars, amino acids, fat acids, and nucleotides.
